Since 2020, online fitness training has exploded in popularity. Apps, video calls, programme downloads — there’s no shortage of digital options. But does online training actually work as well as in-person sessions? This is a question we get regularly at Core and More Fitness in Clapham, and the honest answer is: it depends.
What Online Training Does Well
Online training offers accessibility, convenience, and cost efficiency. If you’re a self-motivated individual who already knows how to train with good technique, a well-designed online programme can be highly effective. You get structure and accountability without the cost of a gym membership and session fees.
For clients who travel frequently, live outside South London, or simply prefer training alone, online coaching can be a genuine solution.
Where Online Training Falls Short
Technique feedback is the single biggest limitation. Most people — even experienced gym-goers — have technique issues they’re unaware of. These range from minor inefficiencies that limit progress to genuine injury risks. A coach watching you deadlift on a 2-inch phone screen cannot give you the feedback a coach standing three feet away can.
Accountability is weaker online. The barrier to skipping a session when there’s no appointment, no journey, and no coach waiting for you is lower. Research consistently shows higher adherence rates in in-person training.
Injury risk management is more difficult remotely. A coach in person can spot the early signs of a movement dysfunction or compensation pattern before it becomes an injury. This is harder to do through a screen.
In-Person Training: The Advantages
In-person training at a facility like Core and More Fitness in Clapham provides real-time technique correction, responsive programming based on how you feel and move on that day, genuine relationship and accountability, access to a full range of equipment, and the ability to push harder safely because a coach is right there.
For beginners especially, in-person training is strongly recommended. The learning curve for correct movement technique is steep, and getting it right from the start prevents months of bad habits being baked in.
A Hybrid Approach
Many clients benefit from a combination: in-person sessions two to three times per week, supplemented by coached online sessions or independently executed programmes on other days. This captures the coaching quality of in-person training while extending the frequency.
Our Recommendation
If you’re new to training, returning after an injury, or have specific goals that require technical skill development — in-person training will get you better results, faster, and more safely. If you’re experienced, self-motivated, and looking for structure at a lower cost, quality online coaching can work well.
